Anti-Aging Diet

June 24, 2008

Did you know that a proper, nutritious diet can prevent aging and can help you to remain smart and young throughout your life? Anti-aging is not a myth and is possible as one’s body is designed to heal and repair itself with the help of nutrients provided by a healthy diet. In one’s body, the cells keep on dying and replacing themselves. Hence, if you provide a proper nourishing diet to your body, the cell dying would replace itself with a stronger and a healthy cell which in turn would lead to the process of anti-aging. Similarly, a diet rich in carbohydrate, fat, sugar and oil would lead to an early aging of a person.

With an increase in age, an increase in the intake of essential nutrients should also take place. Vitamins like vitamin D helps to prevent osteoporosis from taking place. Similarly, the intake of vitamin B should also be increased with growing age as the lack of vitamins like folic acid, vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 can lead to formation of heart diseases and memory loss.

Incorporating foods high in antioxidants in one’s diet can help to keep the process of aging at bay. Hence, one should increase one’s intake of fresh vegetables and fruits. Dark green, leafy vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts and others are rich in vitamin C and they also contain anti-cancer substances like sulphoraphane and genistein in them. Similarly, garlic and ginger have antioxidant, antiseptic and antiviral properties which can reduce high blood pressure and can also help protect the body against cancer and heart disease. Other anti-aging foods consist of raw nuts, soaked and sprouted grains, whole grains, legumes, olive oil and foods with omega 3 fatty acids like flaxseed oil. The research carried out in 2007 on rats at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand revealed that honey could be used to combat the effects of ageing, including memory decline and anxiety.

The anti-aging foods thus are those which supply all the basic nutrients needed for a healthy body. These anti-aging foods include carbohydrates, proteins, good fats, nuts, whole grains, spices and herbs. Thus, eat healthy to remain smart and young forever.
