Are you starving yourself?
In a health crazy world where people are running after ‘size-zero’, anorexia has become a threatening kind of eating disorder which is affecting young girls in particular. It is a kind of self-induced weight loss in which young girls and even boys avoid fattening foods, take excessive exercise and also use laxatives or diuretics to cause self-induced vomiting.
While a person suffering from anorexia initially starts doing dieting, the craze for a slim body attains a kind of psychological disorder due to the obsessive anxiety relating to one’s body. Anorexia Nervosa is a complex condition which involves neurobiological, psychological as well as sociological components. Puberty, stress and even fear of public opinion on one’s figure can lead to a triggering off of anorexia in which the anorexic patient picks up an unrealistic weight expectation which can lead to one’s self destruction.
While an anorexic person has a desire to attain a slim body, the desire is not a healthy one as such kind of extreme methods can lead to many different physical and mental ailments. The most common problem which occurs due to less intake of food which in turn implies inadequate intake of nutrients is that of anemia and bone-loss. In addition, an anorexic person always feels weak and tired due to lack of a balanced diet. It has also been found that hormonal abnormalities take place in anorexic women and can also lead to infertility. Moreover, according to a research, if an anorexic woman does not regain back a nominal weight before her pregnancy, then she runs a high risk for miscarriage as the body becomes unable to provide nutrients to the foetus. Anorexia results in emotional crisis of depression also with an increased tendency of suicide.
Anorexia should be treated as soon as possible as people who do not receive treatment can become chronically ill and can even die. While anorexic treatment aims to restore the person to a healthy weight, it is important to treat them emotionally also as such people need to rediscover their self-esteem and pride to overcome their fear of dipping self-image.
