Amla The Natural Herb

June 23, 2008

Amla, also known as Amalaki is one of the widely used herbs in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Though all parts of the amla tree have medicinal value, it is specifically its fruit which constitutes as the main drug. Along with being the richest source of vitamin C, it also contains calcium, iron, protein, sugar, phosphorous and others. Amla has great medicinal value as it is believed to rejuvenate all the organ systems of the body thereby leading to an overall health and wellness of a person. It is due to this reason that the Ayurvedic doctors believe that Amla has the magical powers to prevent ageing and thus promote longevity.

Amla powder is widely used for enhancing the general immune system of a person. It is an effective remedy for hyperacidity, ulcers and blood impurities. Along with being used as a tonic for general health, amla has a haematinic and lipalytic function and is thus useful for the treatment of Scurvy and Jaundice. In addition, it stops premature graying or hair loss, encourages hair and nail growth and helps in improving one’s eyesight. Amla is used in Ayurveda as a cardiotonis, antipyretic, antidiabetic and as a gastrointestinal tonic. Its antibacterial prevents infections and helps in the fast healing of ulcers.

Vitamin C, an essential ingredient for the human body, is naturally found in amla. It is believed to contain 20 times the amount of vitamin C found in oranges. It thus helps in the treatment of scurvy which is a disease caused by the deficiency of vitamin C. Due to its innumerable benefits, Ayurveda has made use of this natural herb in many of their ayurvedic preparations such as chyawanprash. Such preparations help in improving memory and intelligence level and thus different kinds of amla preparations like pickles and chutneys are seen being made in Indian houses also.
