Alleviating Arthritis through Natural Means

July 22, 2008

Being a disease of the inflammation of joints, arthritis can slowly cripple a person as it weakens the bones and joints of the body thereby restricting flexibility and movement. Arthritis is characterized by joint stiffness, swelling, redness and pain. This problem can be of various forms like those which are caused by the wear and tear of cartilage (osteoarthritis) or those which occur due to an overactive immune system (rheumatoid arthritis). Arthritis can be prevented as well as cured through natural and home made methods. Thus, one should follow some basic tips to ward off the problem of joints which can literally immobilize a person.

Preventing arthritis is any day simpler, better and safer than the whole process of curing it. The best way to ward off the hampering osteoarthritis from one’s life is by indulging in its natural cure through anti-oxidants. One should eat plenty of fruits and vegetables as they are good sources of antioxidants which in turn ensure that one’s cartilage remains healthy. Eating food items which contain a high fiber content and minimum fat can help in minimizing the destruction of one’s joints. One should increase one’s intake of flavonoid rich foods like cherries along with other items like pumpkin, ginger, coriander, asafetida and turmeric to ensure the health and well-being of one’s joints. People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should increase their intake of omega-3-fatty acids which can be found in fish oil. In addition, an extra supplement of calcium, zinc and vitamin C is advised for people suffering from arthritis.

Along with a proper diet, some oil massages can also help in relieving pain associated with arthritis. A gentle massage with warm olive oil or castor oil along with steam baths can be helpful in the treatment of pain associated with joint inflammation. Rubbing the aching joints with hot vinegar before going to bed can be an effective remedy of treating arthritis. In addition, circulation around the joints can be improved through application of essential oils while oils of Lavender and Rosemary can have mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

By following some natural and home made remedies, one can prevent as well as cure the pain and swelling associated with this threatening problem of arthritis which can immobilize a person and bring his life to a standstill.
