All About Kidney Stones

September 5, 2008

As the name suggests, kidney stone is a solid mass that consists of a collection of tiny crystals that deposit in the kidney or in the ureter leading to various health hazards. Kidney stones generally form when the urine gets concentrated with certain substances which eventually transform into small crystals and stones. Kidney stones do not display any particular symptom until they reach down the ureter causing pain and discomfort. The pain associated with this problem is usually severe which starts in the flank region moving down to the groin. It is generally believed that kidney stones can be caused due to hereditary factors, diet, excess consumption of diuretic and calcium-containing antacids and can also be caused due to geographical factors where-in people living in hot areas like Southern United States being more susceptible to this problem.

Kidney stones can be of various kinds of which calcium stones are the most common. Calcium present in the body can combine with other substances like oxalate, phosphate or carbonate to form the stone in the body. Similarly, uric acid stones are common in men and cystine stones can be found in people with cystinuria. Women generally suffer from struvite stones which are a result of urinary tract infection. Kidney stones are usually characterized by waves of pain which is intense and sudden. Sweating, nausea and vomiting are other symptoms and sometimes blood in urine can also be a symptom of kidney stone.

The risk of kidney stone formation in the body can be minimized by drinking lots of water and avoiding dehydration of the body. This would help in keeping the urine clear and not concentrated. Limiting the amount of oxalate and calcium based foods, limiting salt intake and limiting alcohol consumption can be effective in the prevention as well as treatment of this problem. For people suffering from kidney stones, proper medical care is advised as there are medications available for the treatment of this problem.
