All about Alzheimer’s disease

July 17, 2008

We all have heard about Alzheimer’s disease and how it impairs one’s brain and memory over a period of time. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain which gradually affects one’s memory, reasoning, judgment, language and perception. In short, it is a disease which makes a person a living vegetable with the passage of time. The clicking of the clock does not bring with it hope and optimism for an Alzheimer’s patient as every tick of the clock signifies their passing periods of health. While there is no cure which has been officially accepted by the medical sciences, there are some methods available which can help in lessening the symptoms of this disease along with slowing down its dangerous progression.

Alzheimer’s disease is becoming common in people above the age of 70. However, this is not a disease which is associated with the normal process of aging. Loss of memory, depression, anxiety and paranoia are some symptoms which are associated with this disease. Alzheimer’s is marked by abnormal clumps and irregular knots of brain cells which destroy the healthy brain tissues and affect the areas of the brain associated with intellectual function. Moreover, many scientists believe that this disease results from an accumulation of a specific protein in the brain that leads to the death of nerve cells.

While there is no specific treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, people affected by it should not lose hope as there are certain medications available which can help with cognitive and behavioral symptoms associated with this disease. Most people suffering from this disease get depressed as they know their bleak future. However, the near and dear ones of such patients should provide as much support as possible so as to support their mental and emotional well-being. While there is hope, there is life and hence, one should never give up hope till the last moment.
