About Postpartum depression
After pregnancy, some women suffer from mild case of depression while others suffer from a deliberate condition known as postpartum depression. Such woman suffering from postpartum depression develops prolonged feeling of sadness, anxiety, insomnia, extreme fatigue and even frequently thought of suicide or harming her child.
Remember that there is no direst link between the postpartum depression and a drastic hormonal change accompanied by the birth of your baby, but the constant demands of your baby leaves you fatigued and overwhelmed. A woman who has high expectations and who try to accomplish too much, at times set herself on depression stage. The inability to be a perfect parent also affects her self esteem and can increases her risk of failure. Here heredity and previous history also plays an important role. A history of mental illness or a difficult postpartum adjustment either by her or any of her family member increases her risk. Even a woman who abruptly stop breastfeeding her baby experiences a great drop in her hormone levels, which increases her feelings of depression. Mind it that breastfeeding releases hormones that keep new mothers calm and in relaxed mood. Breastfeeding also prevent the release of stress hormone in new mothers.
It is very important to identify the problem of postpartum depression in women so that timely cure for that can be taken for preventing it. Understanding and compassion from family members, adequate rest, good nutrition and assistance in completion of daily day-today activities are really important things require for dealing this ailment. Even counseling and support groups benefits some women. But In extreme cases, drug therapy with antidepressants can be given to woman. Some physicians also think that the injection of progesterone after delivery also reduces the symptoms in women whose depression is caused by severe hormone withdrawal.
