5 Ways to Prevent a Panic Attack

June 29, 2009

panicattackPeople who are regularly afflicted with panic attacks will experience a myriad of physical symptoms. Some people may become hot and sweaty while others feel cold and numb.

A panic attack can cause a person to feel dizzy. They may experience a twitching sensation in their face or eye. When people have a panic attack, their chest feels like it is closing and tight, which can make breathing very difficult.

Some people who have experienced this have thought that they were having a heart attack and run to the emergency room to be treated. The symptoms of a panic attack may not lead to death but their severity can make people feel like they are dying.

This can disable them and prohibit them from temporarily being able to perform simple tasks. This article talks about five ways to prevent a panic attack.

1.    Understand what triggers your panic attack. Everyone has their own individual trigger. Identify what causes you to become stressed out and either avoid it or devise a coping plan.

2.    Refrain from consuming foods, beverages, and pills that contain caffeine. Caffeine works as a stimulant and can trigger the central nervous system.

3.    Learn how to relax. There are different forms of exercise that incorporate deep breathing routines. One such activity is yoga. When you feel a panic attack coming on, focus on your deep breathing exercises.

4.    Make sure you are getting enough sleep. When you sleep, you are able to relieve stress. When you are unable to sleep your body and mind become more agitated.

5.    Add exercise to your daily plan. Exercising causes endorphins to be released from the brain. Endorphins are the body’s feel good hormone. Exercise will make you feel better about yourself and gain more energy.

You can also try a variety of natural supplements made from herbs. If the symptoms are serious and are interfering with your daily activities you may want to consider speaking with a mental health provider.

They can provide you counseling and guidance and if necessary, administer medication to keep you calm.
