Bridal Trousseau : Yesterday and Today      Bookmark and Share

Bridal Trousseau is an old term which means all those things that a bride assembles and keeps under her possession in expectance of her marriage. In older times the brides were believed to have a “hope chest”. This “ hope chest ” was meant to carry bridal jewelry, accessories to match her new dresses, lingeries, make-up kit , toiletries, bath towels and even bed linens to help the bride get started with her new life .

The tradition was started mainly in Europe. It was observed as a need of a bride. But in the Victorian era the bridal trousseau was a symbol of luxuriance and benchmark. There were supposed to be dresses for every occasion. There used to be velvet dresses with expensive laces. Then there were distinctive dinner dresses and ball room dresses which were especially imported from Paris. Do not be amazed if I tell you that there were even special dresses for gardens and yacht areas. Even tea parties had expressive dresses.

Though the times have changed still the tradition of bridal trousseau has been maintained. This way the bride feels much indulged with the idea of starting a new life. The choice of bridal trousseau may differ depending upon what is the style of the bride. She might be one of those simple girls for whom everything has been table-set by her parents or she may be one of those who have been doing her own wedding planning. Bridal trousseau can be made elaborative with post-wedding wear, matching jewelry, bridal lingerie, bath robes, etc.

One thing you can be definite about is to have loads of new dresses to epitomize your new married life. Even if you are a corporate trouser women, your social wear will be somewhat typified. For those of you who are used to sleeping in a T-shirt can get some new set of satin chemises to feel special in special nights
