The various Sindhi wedding rituals are briefed in the following lines.
Paon Dhulai
One of the most intriguing Sindhi weddings is Paon Dhulai. Here, the couples sit together but a screen of cloth is held between them. By this they cannot see each other.
Meanwhile , the bride`s brother washes her feet with raw milk in a broad bronze Thaal. He then also washes the feet of the groom.
The wedding priest then takes measurement of the foot of both the groom as well as the bride by a head. This thread may be kept by the bride.
Jaimaala
A simple ceremony where the groom and the bird exchange heavy floral garlands with each other.
Hathialo
An interesting sindhi wedding ritual is when one side of the bride`s sari is tied to a scarf which is worn by the groom.
Then the priest ties their hands with holy threads. Tying of their right hands by this marks their eternal marriage bond.
As the priest chants mantras, the couple seeks blessings of the God for a good married life.
The formal wedding liturgy
This is performed in presence of close friends and family relatives.
As the bride and the groom are asked to sit before the holy fire, the priest recites holy Vedic mantras.
Then they are asked to take four circlets around the sacred fire. By doing so, they take vows related to their fidelity, respect, physical union and love towards each other.
The sindhi wedding rituals also includes a wedding ritual in which the groom places the bride`s hand over his forehead.
This signifies that he accepts the bride to be her wedded wife. He takes the vow to be at her side during every thick and thin in life.
This also denotes that the groom accepts the bride as her destiny.
Kanyadaan
It is a sensitive occasions in Sindhi wedding rituals. Here, the father of the bride gives the hand of her daughter in the groom’s hand and takes promise from him to take care of his daughter.
This ceremony is followed by an emotional custom of Vidaai.
