Wedding in the family, Punjabis make it sure that it should go with all the traditional and rituals that have been followed since years. Punjabi weddings are very modern, very big yet very traditional.

The Punjabi wedding rituals starts in early morning. First is application of batna, paste of turmeric and flour over the boy/girl’s face, hands, arms, and legs. Batna is known to beautify the skin. After the same, the girl/ boy bathe and come and sit for the puja. In the puja, the girl’s maternal uncle makes her wear the chura, ivory red and white bangles, that would make her look like a bride. Afterwards the girl’s family members tie kalirey, jingles, on the girl’s wrist with the chura. Then the girl gets ready for the wedding.

At the boy’s end, after the boy wears the dress for the wedding, one of the well known Punjabi wedding rituals, sehrabandi, is done where the groom’s mother tie the sehra, veil of flowers, on the turban. While doing this, the mother prays that the coming life of the groom be as fresh and fragrant as flowers. To prevent the groom/bride from evil intentions and evil eye, vaarna ritual is performed using cash. Then the groom sits on a female horse and leaves to get his bride.

At the venue, the bride’s family welcomes the groom and his family, baraat, and milni ceremony is performed wherein the bride’s relatives gift the groom’s relatives.

The girl is led to the wedding mandap, and thereafter kanyadaan is performed where the bride’s father gives her hand in groom’s hand, and blesses both of them. Followed by this, the pheras are taken, taking vows in front of the sacred fire, and afterwards they seek blessings from the elders. Hence they are announced as legally wedded couple.
