Mr. Singh is preparing for his daughter’s wedding and wants to make the wedding BIG and traditional so as to assure his daughter be safe from all the evil intentions and be blessed with all good wishes.
So here is the list of pre - wedding Punjabi rituals that will be followed before the final day of wedding of his dear daughter.
First is the roka, where both the families will secure their commitment by formally announcing that the match for the child has been found. It’s done in the presence of close family members where in the girl’s maternal uncle will gifts a nose ring which the girl will wear on the wedding day. Then is the occasion of sagai, where the couple exchanges rings and hence stand legally engaged.
Then is the Sagan, where the girl’s family bring gifts for the boy. The girl’s father then applies tikka on the boy’s forehead and blesses the groom.
Thereafter for chunni chadai, the boy’s mother places a red chunni (stole) on the girl’s head and gifts her with basket of seven dried fruits: cashew nuts, chuahara (dried dates), almonds, coconut pieces, raisins, khurman (dried apricots) and phoolmakhana. And also gift her jewellery, make up accessories, sindoor, mehndi, red nail polish, bindi, etc. symbolising a new start with in-laws. And then the boy’s sister puts a dot of mehndi on the girl’s palm.
Then is the sangeet, which is meant for all the dance and fun. All the females gather together and sing suhaag (wedding songs) and bless the girl and along with are the function of Mehendi. Here the bride is adorned with beautiful henna designs. Married relatives and young girls too get henna designs made on their hands.
And after these series of pre-wedding Punjabi rituals comes the main day, where the bride and the groom take vows in front of the sacred fire and then they seek blessings from elders.
