There are several pre wedding maharashtrian rituals.
Sakhar Puda
This pre wedding maharashtrian ritual is also called as the formal engagement and is performed by the elders of the family. The packet of sugar is exchanged by the two families which symbolizes their sweet relationship.
This ceremony takes place about one or two days before the wedding day function
Kelvan
This is a ceremony in honor of the family deity or the coldest. Prayers are recited to please them. There is a gathering of close friends and relatives and in the end of the ceremony a meal is spread out to all.
Haldi ritual
This pre wedding maharashtrian wedding ritual takes place just a day before the wedding day. Here the bride and the groom are applied with turmeric paste on their skin. This is known to give them a beautiful skin complexion.
After the bath, the bride wears a sari and is gifted a blouse piece and a coconut.
Seemaan pujan
This is another pre wedding maharashtrian ritual. When the groom arrives at the venue of wedding where the gathering from the bride`s side is waiting for them, the parents of the bride perform seemaan pujan for the groom. This is done because of the belief that the groom is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu who has come to marry their daughter, who is believed to be incarnation of Goddess Laxmi.
After this ritual is over, the groom receives gifts by the parents of the bride. These gifts include a watch, any gold ornament; probably a chain or a ring; and clothing.
Antarpat ritual
Before the marriage can me started with, this pre wedding maharashtrian ritual is performed. Here a piece of large cloth is paced between the bride and the groom so that they are not able to look at each other.
