Family in Gujarat, wedding in the family, and everyone wants to go about it in a most cultural and traditional way so as to assure that the bride and the groom be blessed always and are safe from the evil eye. Another reason of such a traditional way of going about the wedding is that fact that the Gujaratis are really bound their roots of culture and rituals. Not only on the wedding day, but the pre wedding Gujarati rituals are also performed with all the whole heartedness.
The first function that is performed is mandap mahurat, in which lord ganesha is worshiped and pray to him to remove all the obstacles. The puja is performed by a priest in front of a sacred fire.
The next ritual of the pre wedding Gujarati rituals is griha shanti. This is also a very important puja which is performed at both the bride’s and the groom’s house. The puja is done at an auspicious time. It is done for matching the horoscopes of the bride and the groom. This puja is also performed by a priest in the presence of all the family members and relatives of the bride’s father. It is done to seek blessings from god for peace in the couple’s constellation and hence in the married life of the couple.
The final ritual of the pre wedding Gujarati rituals is jaan. This ritual is one of the interesting ritual in which the groom visits the bride’s place. The wit about the ritual is that the mother in law of the groom clutches the nose of the groom to make him realise and understand the sacrifice her daughter is about to make. This is followed by the blessings that the bride’s mother showers on the groom to save him from evil eye. Hence the bride and groom get ready to perform the wedding rituals.
