The girl has been decided, everything seems to be favourable, then what is everyone waiting for?
Well matching the horoscope is a very important in the Buddhism. So it’s one of the important pre wedding Buddhist rituals. The boy’s family consults the lama, the priest, and selects an appropriate day which would be best for putting forward the marriage proposal.
According to the pre wedding Buddhist rituals, the boy’s family friend visits the girl’s family, after the girl has been decided, and horoscope is matched. Either the boy or the boy’s parents select the girl for the boy. The friend takes wine bottle along with him. And main motive of his visit is to see the response of the girl’s family to the proposal. If the family of the girl give a positive response, then day for engagement is decided and fixed. This meeting is called khachang.
Nangchang is the ceremony when formal engagement of the couple takes place. The nangchang is presided over by a lama. The guests at the girl’s house bring Tsang or other meat to her house. There is special way of thanksgiving the girl’s mother to have breast fed the girl. This is done by gifting rice and chicken too girl’s mother by girl’s maternal uncle. The Tsang and meat is also given to girl’s unmarried sisters and brothers. After the engagement is done, the couple live together either in girl’s house or in boy’s house.
One of the pre wedding Buddhist rituals is the chessian bethoral ceremony. In this ceremony, the maternal uncle of the girl’s parents is made to sit on a raised platform. The priest then recites a prayer and distributes madyan, a religious drink to everyone present.
And finally a day for the wedding is decided and they perform the wedding in front of Lord Buddha’s shrine.
