Two days from today is the wedding day, and the family is all set for the same. As it’s the Assamese wedding, so it will be made traditional. And so the preparations are also going to be performed according to pre-wedding Assamese rituals. Traditions will be followed so as to assure that the girl/boy is blessed and are safe from evil eye.
The pre wedding Assamese rituals comprise of Juran ceremony, Tel Diya custom, Pani Tola & Nuani tradition. Let’s put some light on what all is done on these particular ceremonies.
First of the pre wedding Assamese rituals is Juran ceremony. In this ritual, the groom’s mother and some close relatives visit the bride’s house. Only female members of the family participate in this ceremony. The bride’s mother welcomes the guests warmly with a xhorai. A xhorrai is a brass plate with a stem consisting of betel nut and betel leaves, which are covered in gamocha. Gamocha is cloth woven specially for the wedding.
Next is the ceremony called tel diya, which is the main ritual of all the pre wedding Assamese rituals. In this custom, the groom’s mother places a betel and a ring on the bride’s hair partition. Then she pours oil that she brought with her. She does it for three times. And finally she puts sindoor and gifts her with wedding gifts, and most specially, a mekhla chadar, which is traditional dress for assamese women.
Tel diya custom is followed by pani tola. In this ceremony, the bride’s and groom’s mother gather holy water, which is later used for bride’s ceremonial bath. This custom is then ultimately followed by the nuani tradition that involves bathing the bride, and helping her to get ready for the wedding.
And then the holy wedding takes place and everyone present there bless the newlywed couple.
