An observation about the traditional Indian Kannada wedding is that it is a simpler affair than most of the other Indian weddings. one similarity being that the wedding rituals are well classified into pre-wedding rituals, wedding rituals and post wedding rituals.
Let us throw some light over the post wedding Kannada rituals.
One of the first post wedding Kannada rituals is the ceremony of Graha Pravesh Tradition. In this ceremony, the bride receives a warm welcome by her in-laws. Her mother-in-law welcomes her and asks her to kick down a kalash full of rice and then enter the home. She is asked to do so by her right foot.
This ritual is performed because the newly wed bride is considered as a form of Goddess Lakshmi.
The ceremony of name change is performed. By a mutual decision of the groom and the bride, a new name for the bride is chosen. This name is them inscribed in a ring containing rice.
Then, on the second day after the marriage ceremony, the parents of the bride come to escort the newly weds to their own home. The couple then stays for few days at the house of the parents of bride. Afterwards, the parents of the groom come and take them back.
Five saris are given to the bride by the groom’s side. Special sari is given for the occasion of Dare Puja, for which a Kanjeevaram saree is selected for the bride. Another special saree is given to her whom the bride wears when she has to sit with the groom after the ceremony of Graha Pravesh. A little simpler sarees are given for the ceremony of Haldi and of Puja. An interesting thing to note here is that the groom’s family provides the bride with the dresses that she wears in all the major events of the wedding.
A grand reception is given by the groom and his family. Here, mouthwatering elaborative Kannada cuisine is served on banana leaves.
