Pheras are done, and the couple is blessed by everyone around. The groom puts sindoor on the bride’s forehead and hence they stand as a blessed couple. Happiness of getting the right one, happiness of successful conclusion of the whole wedding, and sorrow of leaving the paternal house and moving into a new family. Now comes the time to perform all the post wedding Gujarati rituals and welcoming the bride with open arms and shower of blessings.
The bride, with mixed feelings in the heart, leaves her paternal house amidst tears and grief. This sorrowful ritual is known as vidai. The elderly married women of the girl’s family speak aashirwaad softly into the right ear of the bride. The couple then comes back to the groom’s house, and perform the post wedding Gujarati rituals.
The ceremony which takes place immediately after the wedding is the reception ceremony. It is basically the event wherein the friends and relatives of the newlywed couple bless latter. And also the guests present them with gifts.
Another one of the post wedding Gujarati rituals is ghar nu lakshmi which means the bride who is entering the groom’s house is goddess lakshmi who is going to bring wealth and good luck into the family. The groom’s mother will place a vessel filled with rice at the entrance. And while bride enters the house, she gently pushes the vessel with her right foot to intentionally spill some rice n the floor. This ritual is for making her understand the responsibilities towards her new family.
After entering the house, the couple plays aeki-beki. In this ritual the couple is made to play a game in which a ring along with several coins is placed in a tray which is then filled with water and vermilion. The person, who finds the ring for four times, is believed to be the ruler of the house.
