Marwadis are extremely traditionally rooted people and they believe strongly in their cultural ceremonies. May be because of this, marwadis are well known for their ethnic rigidly. Therefore most of the marwadi marriages are arranged marriages.
The ceremony has expanded pre-wedding and post wedding functions in order to celebrate union of not just two people but two families. The customs and rituals in a marwadi wedding are performed just as they have been performed since old times.
The aristocracy and heritage can be observed in everything from the décor to the dresses.
The first ceremony being the engagement or Tilak ceremony. Here the brother of the bride places a tilak on the forehead of the groom. Marwadi people gift swords, sweets, fruits, etc to the groom.
Next ceremony is of Ganpat sthapan . Installation of lord Ganesha is done by bride’s or groom’s parents. All functions are carried out after this ceremony.
The ceremony of Pithi Dastoor is performed as Dholans sing and dance .At their respective houses, the groom and the bride are bathed with turmeric.
This is followed by the act of Ghoomar, a form of special dance performed by women. This ceremony is called Mehfil and is solemnized in both the houses.
Mahira Dastoor is an interesting ceremony prior to Marwadi wedding . It is said that since the wedding preparations involve a lot of expenditure, therefore in order to help the bride’s mother, her maternal uncle helps with money in marriage.
Other intriguing ritual are Janev ceremony and PallaDastoor.
The day of marriage marks the welcome of a baraat by the bride`s family. The rituals and customs are performed as per Hindu marriages.
Pots-marriage rituals observed are Vidaai or Bidaai, Griha pravesh and Pagelagni. Pagelagni is a ceremony in which bride is introduced to each member of groom’s family while still in veil. Once this ceremony is over, the bride can finally unveil herself.
