Kerela, where local language is malayalee, observes Malayalee wedding.

People of kerela have long been known for their simplicity in living as well as in religious beliefs. Let’s know something more about a traditional malayaleewedding and take a step further to understand the soberness of their rituals and customs

The pre wedding rituals observed muhurtham , Nischayam and a traditional feast for all invited.

Muhurtham is a simple custom of reading the horoscopes of both the girl and the boy. Using this information, the match –making is done. This also used to decide an auspicious day for the wedding solemnization.

Whereas, Nischayam is a formal affirmation or engagement by both the families that they both accept their marriage. An interesting thing to notice here is that the bride and the groom are not present at this occasion. The ritual is done by the elders of the family.

Before the wedding, a traditional meal is prepared at the brdie`s paternal home. The bride is asked to take seat facing towards east. She is then served a 5 course complete vegetarian meal which she partakes with her family.

At the wedding day, the groom’s wear includes a dhoti. The wedding ceremony is a simple one in which the couple is supposed to take three circlets around the sacred fire. The groom ties a yellow thread around her neck .the wedding is concluded by the couple touching each others foreheads. This symbolizes that they seek blessings from the God to set their minds as one.

The post wedding ceremonies in a malayaleewedding observes a simple tradition of welcoming the bride by her mother in law. As the couple makes there way through the entrance, earthen lamps are lit to mark their welcome. These are called by the name of Kudivep.
