Though stuck is the city of glamour in the state of Maharashtra, yet their wedding ceremonies are no lavish affair.

Let’s read on to know more

Though most of the maharashtrian wedding rituals are common with a traditional Hindu marriage, still, there are some customs which stand characteristic only to the maharashtrian people.

Horoscope matching

Although, these days the girls and the groom chose their own life partner but they start matching by horoscope of both is necessary in some families. Once such matching formalities are done, both fameless starts with the preparation of the wedding.

There are a number of pre wedding ceremonies in a typical maharashtrian wedding.

The ritual of SakharPuda in which the two families exchange sugar packets is an interesting ritual. Kelvan ceremony includes paying respects to the family deity and seeking their blessings.

In the haldiceremony, the bride is given a coconut and a blouse piece. Then turmeric paste is applied on her body. Groom too is applied the turmeric paste. Bathing follows next.

While the wedding is performed as the Hindu marriage custom of Saptadi, another ritual of Karmasampati is performed. Here the father of the bride bears water in his left hand and pass it over to his right hand. Vedic mantras are recited, meanwhile. This is done in order to please the god and they seek their blessings for the couple.

Once the wedding has been solemnized, a big feast awaits for all. The meal is traditionally served on banana leaves. The close family members sit with the bride and the groom and together they enjoy the meal.

Grihapravesha

The couple receives a warm welcome at the groom’s home by his mother. She washes the feet of them both with milk. Then the bride is asked to push a pot full of rice with her right foot and step forward into the house.
