The celebrations and rituals just do not seem to end even after solemnization of the wedding in Kashmiri marriages.
Kashmiri people have elaborative post wedding Kashmiri rituals.
These are distinctive to Kashmiri weddings only.
Here is a briefing about them
Satraat
After the marriage , the bride visits her parent’s house with her husband. Some children from the groom’s family also accompany them. They may be of her brother-in-law’s or her sister-in-law’s children.
The bride’s parents welcome them and give cash or Shagun, salt and new clothing to their daughter.
Dusa or a Pashmina shawl of six yard is gifted to the groom. Both the bride and the groom change into these new clothes before leaving for their house.
Phirlath
The second visit of the bride and the groom to bride’s parents is called Phirlath. They both are given new clothing once again in form of Shagun
Roth khabar
One of the most interesting Kashmiri post wedding rituals is Roth khabar.
Choosing between Tuesday and Saturday, the bride’s parents send a 1 meter long and 2.5 meter wide freshly baked cake garnished with nuts to the bride’s new home. The cake is distributed to her in-laws and also in neighborhood. The bride returns to her paternal house with the person who had brought the cake. The groom is sent to get her back.
Ghar atchun
The sister and the brother of the bride escort her and bring her back to her paternal home for one day. This is somewhat like the modern day reception with difference that the party is given by the bride’s parents instead of the groom.
The bride arrives wearing all the jewelry and clothing given to her by her in-laws.
In the evening, guests from the in-laws side arrive.
A grand non-vegetarian meal is prepared for both the families by the Waza. The in-laws return after the feast with gifts given to the bride by her parents. Gifts include fruits, sweets, clothing and jewelry.
