In comparison to other Indian wedding, a Kannada wedding is observed as a simpler event.Although, like many other Indian wedding, the kannada wedding too is divided distinctively into pre-wedding rituals, wedding rituals and post wedding rituals. Here, we will try to cover some interesting things about a traditional Kannada wedding.

A traditional Kannada bride wears a nine yard saree called navari. Her bangles are green in color and made of glass. The jewelry is made up of gold, preferably. The wardrobe of the groom consists of a pitambar, a pheta, a turban and a silk dhoti. The groom is supposed to hold a stick which is already sanctified.

There are certain communities in Kannada community. For example, in the community of Baliga, the wedding dress for the bride consists of a beautiful white sari with a complimentary border. Sikh dhoti with a contrasting border is what makes the wedding attire of the groom. A white shirt is also worn by him along with an ornamental turban which is made out of gold brocade. This is called as a Pheta. The groom also wears a large prominent tilak on his forehead.

Another example of variation in attire is in a Croog Kannada wedding. A Croog wedding dresses in ethnic brocade sari. She drapes this saree in a traditional Croog style. The bride`s head is covered with a veil.

As a wedding gift, the groom’s family gifts five sarees to the bride.

Each saree is to be worn throughout various wedding rituals in a traditional Kannada wedding. A simple saree is worn for haldi ceremony but for the special ritual of Dare Puja, the gorgeous Kancheevaram saree is worn by the wedding.

Another occasion to wear a grand saree is when Ganesha Puja is performed and the bride sits next to the groom.

Wedding feast in Kannada wedding is a vegetarian gala occasion. The compulsory things in the menu are Payasam and Papad. There are huge varieties of sweet chutney, kosambari (salads made out of cucumber/beetroot and yogurt)

So next time you are invited to a Kannada wedding, feast on.
