Kesef or kiddushin are popular in Jewish weddings these days. The ritual simply involves putting a ring in the bride`s index finger of left hand by the groom.
This signifies that the bride has accepted the groom as her husband. A verbal acceptance is not required in traditional Jewish wedding by the bride.
For the wedding, the ketubah is read by the priest. The wedding agreement in the form of ketubah is signed by witnesses present. The ring is asked to be placed on the bride`s hand once the ketubah is read. The ketubah has all the clauses. The bride shows her affirmation towards the ketubah by accepting the ring from the man.
The groom is called as chatan in a Jewish wedding. He announcing the declaration, “You are consecrated to me, through this ring, according to the religion of Moses and Israel.”
Those who are asked to witness this wedding speak aloud “Mekudeshet”, right after the groom has spoken his declaration.
The wedding ceremony is performed under the chuppah, which could be any form of canopy. It stands on four poles.This chuppah actually symbolizes that the blessing of God is above them.
This also signifies building of a new together.As the wedding ceremony is done with, the groom and the bride drink wine together. When the bride is done with her drink, the groom steps forward to break that glass with his foot.
The origin of this custom of breaking the glass seems to have a mysterious origin. There are many historical reasoning availed for this ceremony, which is characteristic to Jewish wedding.
