After the girl has been decided, either by boy himself or his parents, the boy’s friend goes to the girl’s family with a bottle of wine or any alcohol. And he also carries with him a white scarf, khada. His main motive is o see if the girl’s family is happy with the proposal. This visit is known as khachang. After both families agree to the proposal, a date for engagement is set.
Nangchang , this is the ceremony in Buddhist wedding that takes place after khachang. This is a formal engagement ceremony. The guests at the girl’s house would bring many kinds of meat to the girl’s house. The girl’s mother is gifted especially with rice and meat. This is basically a way of paying the mother to have breast fed the girl. After the engagement is done, the couple usually lives in together either in girl’s house or the boy’s house.
On the wedding day, the to-be couple, both the families and guest gather in front of the shrine of Lord Buddha. The couple then recite the tisarana, pancasila, and the vandana either in English or Pali.
At the end, the parents of both boy and girl would recite the mangala sutta and jayamangala gatha to bless the newlywed couple.
At the time of vidai, it happens in the most cases that the couple opts to stay at the girl’s house. The couple can decide to stay separate from either of the families. And hence they live happily ever after.
