The Assamese wedding rituals start with the pani tola, where in the bride and the bridegroom bathe in their respective houses. They take bath with the water that their mothers get from a nearby pond or lake or river. After the bathing is done, the bride and the groom get ready in the wedding dresses. The traditional dress for the groom is a dhoti and kurta with a silk shawl on his shoulder. And the girl dresses in a traditional dress called mekhla chadar, a two piece silk cloth.
The wedding reception is done before the actual wedding ceremony in the Assamese community. Delicious food is served to the guest keeping the fish and meat as the main highlight of the menu.
Then is the time to welcome the groom, which is done by the bride’s mother according to the Assamese wedding rituals. Then the bride’s sister washes the groom’s feet. The brother of the bride then lifts the groom sand takes him to the wedding hall. The bride is given panch amrit to eat, which is a mixture of ghee, curd, sugar, honey and raw milk. And she makes an entry into the wedding hall on her maternal uncle’s shoulder.
The wedding then takes place in front of the sacred fire wherein the bride and the groom take vows with the sacred mantras. The sea conch shells are blown after the successful conclusion of the wedding and then the groom puts sindoor on his wife’s forehead. And hence they stand and happily married husband and wife.
