To increase the flow of tourists in the war-ravaged country, the mayor of Augsburg built the Romantic Road in 1951. Romantic Road is today one of the most traveled tourist routes of Germany. Running for over 210 miles, the road connects Wurzburg in the north to the Alps in the south, running through Fussen on its way. The route runs through numerous picturesque locations and historical sites. A travel along the Romantic Road is a perfect way of exploring the natural beauty of this fabulous country.
Attractions along the Romantic Road will include the following sites:
This magnificent mansion was originally commissioned to be built as a palace for the Archbishop of Schonborn. It took nearly twenty-five years to build the exterior of the palace and another forty years to adorn its interior. The opulence of the building is worth admiring.
This fortress overlooking Wurzburg provides a wonderful view of the surrounding idyllic landscape.
This fairytale castle, an example of neo-romantic style of architecture, is perched above the stunning Hohenschwangau valley. Located near the town of Fussen, this castle, also known as the New Swan Stone Castle, was built by King Ludwig II. Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous and beautiful castles of Germany. However, only fourteen of its rooms could be completed before Ludwig’s death.
Fussen is a stunning quite German town, which is a sharp contrast to the busy German metropolitan cities. Located at the foot of the Bavarian Alps, Fussen is perched at a height of 2,650 feet above sea level. River Lech flowing through town adds to its natural charm. The Neuschwanstein Castle and the Schloss Hohenschwangau are the two lovely castles located near this mountain town.
Besides the above sites, the Romantic Road is dotted with several churches displaying Baroque, Rocco and Gothic architectures. There are numerous hotels along the route. The rates are cheap during the winter. Some of the hotel charges include complimentary breakfasts. Parking fee, laundry charges and telephone calls can be quite expensive. Instead of staying in hotels, you can also find accommodations in cheaper hostels.
