Tips to Spot a Liar

001spot-liarWe are always eager to know the truth, but dozens of times we are fooled with a lie. Although, no one will acknowledge that he/she has told you a lie, but if you are a keen observer, you can spot a liar through the speaker’s body language.

Change in regular behavior
Compared to a stranger, you can easily say whether a person close to you is saying a lie. When a close friend or family member is lying, you will notice a distinct change in his regular behavior. When someone close to you is lying, he will appear nervous. His effort to hide the truth will make him guilty. A liar usually speaks briskly or slowly. You might suddenly find a fast talking person, speaking very slowly. This is probably because he is thinking how to make the lie believable, or because he is overwhelmed by a sense of guilt. He will avoid queries, trying to get out of your sight as quickly as possible.

Eye Movement
It is a popular belief, that liars will avoid eye contact while speaking. However, this is not necessarily true. Liars tend to convince people by staring directly at their eyes. This is also an endeavor of liars to understand, whether the person spoken to has believed the lie. Therefore, a liar might stare at your eyes for a long time. The adrenalin secreted, to tackle with the extra effort needed in telling a lie, would cause dilation of the pupils. Liars often make rapid eye movements. They move their eyes to their right, indicating that the creative part of the brain is in action.

Body Movement
While speaking and smiling, liars make use of specific body muscles. Liars make least hand movements. They will touch or scratch the lower part of their face, such as the chin, nose or lips, while speaking. Liars while faking a smile, uses only the muscles of the mouth. On the other hand, our entire face lights up in a natural smile.
