pest-control1 Pest control is an important part of gardening. Fungus, ants and aphids are some of the common enemies of flowers and fruits. You can save your plants from these menaces with commercial pesticides as well as natural pesticides that you can easily make at home.

Here are some easy ways of controlling pests in your garden.

Fungus

Fungus is a common enemy of plants. Careful gardening methods could help prevent development of fungus in your garden. Mildew, rust, black spot, clubroot and verticillium wilt are types of fungus that are commonly found in our gardens. Fungi grow on moist and dark surfaces. You could adopt certain preventative measures to reduce possibilities of development of fungus in your garden. Water your plant early in the morning, so that there is enough time for the leaves to dry in the sunlight. Try to use sterilized garden tools. When planting a new plant, sterilize the pot. You should routinely prune the overgrown shrubs and plants, enabling enough circulation of air and allowing penetration of sunlight. Remove the fallen diseased leaves immediately from your garden.

Despite every precaution, if you still discover fungus in your garden, use a fungicide. Besides the commercial ones, you can make a fungicide at home. In one-quart warm water, add a quarter teaspoon of vegetable oil and one teaspoon of baking soda. Mix the solution well and spray it on your plants. Along with the visible parts of the leaves and flowers, also remember to spray the fungicide on the least exposed parts of the plants, such us on the underside of the leaves.

Ants and aphids

Ants feeding on the honeydew of aphids provide protection to the pests. To remove aphids from your garden, you should at first remove ants from your garden. Several natural products are available that could easily kill ants as well as aphids in your garden. Along the path created by ants, sprinkle grits. When the ants feed on them, the grits expand inside the ants, killing them. Make a paste of orange peel and water. Remove the pulp and pour the water on the anthill in your garden. To deter ants from your garden, plant garlic, marigold, lavender or mint plants in your garden.
