Traveling with kids can sometimes be a trying experience, not only for the kids but for the adults as well. There are a few things you can do to make your traveling time more pleasant for all involved. When you are traveling with a young child, a long trip can seem like a lifetime to them. Pick the time you leave wisely. If you have a long drive, leave in the evening when it is close to bed time. This way, your child will sleep and the car will be at peace.
Another great travel tip is to leave early, before the birds are even chirping. Pack up the car with everything that you can the night before. This way, you can get up while the kids are still sleeping, finish packing the car and get the kids last. By the time they wake up, you will probably be close to stopping for breakfast. You can change their clothes and then the rest of the drive will not seem so long to them.
If you are traveling in the evening, take along things they can play with. Flashlights or glow sticks are perfect for this. But, what if you are traveling by plane? Changing between planes can make your little one anxious. To help with this energy, take a ball with you to play catch or to roll around for your little one to play with. Not only will this keep them occupied but it will help to wear them out for the next flight.
Food can also be an issue for some children. Be sure to call your travel agent or the airline and order children meals. Don’t forget about air sickness. Talk with your pediatrician about this. Be sure to pack a little cooler and bag with goodies. Take juices, milk and snacks. Don’t forget a favorite toy or animal that your child likes as well.
Last but not least, try to board the plane early and let everyone off before you. This will give you plenty of time to get your child and things on board and you will not hold everyone up when trying to get off of the plane.
