How To Overcome Fear Of Dentists
Getting goose bumps before the first appointment with the dentist? Well, you are not alone. Several of us do have the fear of exposing our teeth and gums before doctors hoping nothing would go wrong. But what is fear in comparison to the toothache and bad gums!
Read on if you are still afraid:
1. Get Recommendation: It is but natural to be afraid placing yourself at the hands of a doctor unknown to you. Therefore, find out dentist’s in the knowledge of the close circle of friends and family. Surely there will be someone trusted by family, like a family dentist or so. This removes 30% of the fear. Then what?
2. Break The Ice: Visit the dentist (not without an appointment!) and strike up a conversation, known as ‘breaking the ice’. Discuss the problem you are being faced with and ask the doctor for all possible solutions, the pain and the recovery. Then the process by which the doctor works. This way you will get to be familiar and comfortable for the future sessions.
Admit the fears in front of the doctor. Doing so will help the doctor to handle the case differently and help him to clear further doubt gripping your mind. He will assure you positively.
3. Take Inspiration: You are an adult but see around the doctor’s clinic. There are dozens of young children, some as young as 5 year old. If they have the courage to face the dentist, then you can too. Think like this- those tiny tots are far more brave and advanced than you! Is it not? So where do you stand? Come on, you are an adult by all means.
4. Take A Friend: If you are still afraid, take along a friend with you. The thought of someone being there with you helps even though the person will not be given permission to sit inside with you. But still, psychologically it helps.
