Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
If you are experiencing any symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease like heart burn, chest pain, sore throat, asthma, throat infection etc then consult your doctor immediately. It is always better to treat earlier than late.
Tips to Diagnose Gastresophageal Reflux Disease
1. Family History
The doctor will inquire about your family history like any of your parents or siblings having this disease or whether you have any ancestors who had suffered from gastroesophageal reflux disease. This is because this disease is found to be inherited through genes.
2. Medical History
Your previous medical history will help your doctor to know more about your disease. Your past medications, allergies that you had in the past, the symptoms that you experienced before and now etc will help the doctor to make a conclusion.
3. Barium Swallow Radiograph
This is a special type of X ray in which the patient will be asked to drink a solution made up of barium. It is a chalky fluid. Then the X ray of the person is taken and the fluid will show up in the X ray. This will help the doctor to detect whether the fluid is refluxing back to the esophagus and it also helps the doctor to know any irritations or abnormalities in the esophagus.
4. Twenty four Hour pH- Probe Study
In this method the doctor will insert a small tube in the esophagus of the patient and it will be connected to a device which can monitor the acidity in the esophagus. It can also find out the respiratory problems associated with the acid reflux disease. It is mainly used in people having symptoms of disease but with a clear esophagus with out any damage.
5. Upper Endoscope
Here the patient will be given a medicine to keep himself relaxed or at times the throat will be sprayed with a medicine to make it numb and even at times the patients will be given anesthesia. Then the doctor will insert a flexible thin plastic tube in to the throat, esophagus and to the stomach. This tube will be attached with a camera to see the inside in detail. The doctor will take a sample of tissues from you for biopsy which will help to reveal any infections or other problems.
