How to choose the perfect dress for your beach wedding

beach-bride1A beach wedding is a lovely alternative to a more traditional setting.  The white sand, blue water and tranquil sounds combine for an especially romantic ambiance.   What could be more memorable than a beach ceremony set against a blaze of colour at sunset?   Of course, many couples dream of a beach wedding, but it takes a lot of work to make that fantasy a reality.

Of special consideration is the wedding dress for a beach wedding. The setting is by definition casual, and the dress should be too.  You will also want to acknowledge ‘beach’ as your theme.  That does not mean you can’t have the dress of your dreams; you may just need to choose the fabrics and embellishments with extra care.

Ideas for a casual beach wedding

You will want to keep the dress feeling ‘light’.  Choose a strapless dress, or one with spaghetti straps.  Take advantage of the unusual setting and wear a sarong, or a halter dress.

You can wear almost any length, from a traditional long gown to something short and flirty.  Many brides prefer tea length, because it keeps the dress from trailing in the sand, while still being elegant and ‘bridal’.

Keep the fabrics light and humidity proof.  Avoid fabrics that are heavy and wrinkle easily, such as satins and silks.  Consider crepes, silk charmeuse, chiffon, batiste, or georgette.

Look for styles that flatter your figure.  Even if your shape is less-than-perfect, remember that a tailored, well-fitting dress always looks better than something baggy or shapeless.

Skip the heavy embroidery, beading and sequins.  They are too formal for a beach wedding.

Expand your options.  While white is always classic, soft pastels look great on the beach.

The beach can be windy and humid.  Your hair will probably take a beating.  You might want to consider a lovely straw hat, or a scarf.  In any case, make sure your hair is secured.  Remember that leaving it long and loose will allow it to blow around.  The same will be true for a long veil.

You are likely to be walking in the sand.  Either create walkways, or consider your footwear carefully.  It’s hard to walk in heels in the sand.  Many brides go barefoot for their beach wedding.
