Honduras is rapidly striving to overcome its disrepute as a country plunged in gang wars and environment destruction. This former banana republic is wooing travelers to its wonderful beaches and national preserves.
Arriving here
There are three international airports in Honduras. San Pedro Sula airport is the busiest airport. Roatan and Tegucigalpa airports are a less crowded. Direct flights connecting Honduras to North and South American, Caribbean and several European cities, operate from these international airports.
You can also arrive in Honduras by road from Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Whichever route you choose to arrive at Honduras, remember to bring your passport and visa. A little knowledge of Spanish will help you to explore the country.
Best time to visit
The dry season is the best time to visit the country. February and March is the peak tourist season. May to November is the rainy season in the western and southern parts of Honduras. Bay Islands and the northern coastal strip receive rainfall from September to December.
Honduras Attractions
Roatan on Bay Islands is the most famous tourist destination of Honduras. Divers could hardly miss the attraction of its impressive reef life. The tropical gardens, iguana and butterfly farms and canopy tours are its other attractions. Parque Nacional Jeannette Kawas located on the northern coast of Honduras is one of the scenic locations of the country. Its lagoon and the mangrove forests are home to birds and howler monkeys.
Close to this park is located Gracias. This is an impressive colonial town with churches and cobblestones streets. Lago de Yojoa is the largest lake of the country. Adjacent the lake are two national parks – Santa Barbara and Cerro Azul Meambar. Utila is located on the south of the country. If you are traveling on a tight budget, Utila with its cheap accommodations and food is perfect for you. Utila might not be as stunning as Roatan, but the party scene on its beaches are more vibrant. Comayagua is a lovely colonial town with its beautiful plazas and cathedral.
