Dyspareunia is the medical term for pain during sex. Men and women both can suffer from this. While for men, it is in the form of eczema, bacterial infections, psoriasis and tight foreskin, for women it can be endometriosis, vulvodynia, and other bacterial infections. But most of the time it is the psychological responses that lead to non – responsiveness in women leading to painful sex.
Let’s examine this closely.
1. Vaginismus- It is a condition in which vagina spasms during sex. This is caused by the fear of hurt, mainly in women who have sex or give birth for the first time. The fear leads the body to give negative response at the time of intercourse. Sex education can play a major role to help young women conquer their fear of sex. Also, a man should understand this problem and never pressurize for sex.
The root cause of this lies in parental upbringing where parents instill in the young minds that sex is unclean and sin just to prevent them from pre- marital sex. But they don’t realize the long term effect of this when the girls get married. The girl cannot establish a healthy sexual life till the fear subsides.
2. Cervix– When the penis hits the cervix during intercourse, it results in much pain. Repeated thrust in the same area leads to swelling and tenderness. If the women already suffer from bacterial infections, sex can get really painful.
3. Endometriosis- It is a condition in which the tissues which line the uterus grow in other parts of the body. Because of the absence of lining, sex gets painful. This condition can also lead to infertility.
4. Vulvodynia- It is a condition in which the female vulva is so tender and sensitive that a mere touch induces pain. Therefore, sex becomes impossible.
Apart from medical treatment of these conditions, what is required is good counseling to overcome fear of sex. The common remedy which is advised is to increase the foreplay that will put the woman more at ease.
