Common Medicinal Plants Used In Our Daily Life

Plants that are having a property to heal a disease are called medicinal plant. Medicinal plants are the first and best remedy to cure a disease. These plants have some chemical substances that can act up on us and can cure our aliment. They are as effective as our modern medicines if taken in correct dosage. In our day to day life we are dealing with a number of medicinal plants.



Common Medicinal Plants and their uses

1. Garlic



Garlic /Allium Sativum is a plant having universal acceptance. It can be used against a wide range of diseases. The volatile oil of garlic contains sulphur compounds, alliin and allicin which impart the medicinal property to garlic. They are effective against fungus, bacteria, viruses and alimentary parasites. It can be used to reduce blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol and improve the cardio-vascular system and immune system of the body. It can be used as a protection against plague and as a pesticide against mosquito larvae. It can be used as a diaphoretic, cholagogue, hypotensive, and anti-spasmodic. It is used in the treatments against chronic bronchitis, respiratory catarrh, recurrent colds and influenza and even against whooping. It is helpful in fat lyses also.

2. Ginger

Ginger / Zingiber Officinale is an aromatic carminative having pungent stimulations. It can be used as an anti-spasmodic, rubefacient, diaphoretic and emmenagogue. The volatile oil containing zingiberene and bisabolene, and a mixture of phenolic compounds makes this possible. It causes the blood vessels to dilate and stimulate the circulation. It is used in nausea, sore throat and as a digestive remedy.



3. Pepper Mint

Pepper Mint / Mentha Piperita is a common flavoring agent in our foods. Menthol in pepper mint is used as an analgesic and is incorporated in pain relieving balms. The cooling property makes it an active ingredient in massage oils. It can be used against a range of diseases like headaches, skin irritations, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, menstrual cramps, and flatulence. Peppermint ameliorates the bile flow which in turn helps to digest the fats. The oil of pepper mint helps to decompose the gallstone.

4. Parsley

Parsely / Petroselinum crispum is widely used in our food as a decorative. The amino acid lysine and alkaloid myristicin imparts the medical property to the plant. It helps in digesting the food and avoids the flatulence and thus improves the appetite. It’s an effective diuretic and used in the lysis of kidney and bladder stones. It’s an effective anti-rheumatic, antihelminthic and stimulant also. It helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduces the pain.
