Whether you have a new car or a used car, the same basic car maintenance goes for either one. It is important to look out for your car. Yes, it is a means to get from point A to point B. But, it is also your means of transportation to and from work, not to mention playing taxi for the kids.
Basic car maintenance is essential. If you take care of it then your car will take care of you. The car that you purchase will come with a warranty. The standard is for 3 years. You can also get this extended so you will be covered. This will not only cover you for repairs, but warranties usually come with a tow service as well. And remember, this will cover you no matter whose car you are in.
You also will want to make sure that you keep up on basics such as oil changes, tire rotations and getting your brakes checked. By going to the shop by the date each is due to be done, your car will last longer and you will have fewer problems in the long run.
There are some things that you can do yourself without having to go to the shop. One of these is to keep the windshield washer fluid topped off. This is easy to do. Next is to check your oil regularly. Using a clean cloth, pull out the dipstick, wipe clean, replace and pull back out. You will be able to check the level. You will also want to keep an eye on the coolant level. Look in the handbook that came with your car to find everything under the hood.
Next thing is to check your tire pressure regularly. Your cars handbook will be able to tell you what the pressure should be. Use a tire gauge to check this. Don’t forget to check the spare as well. And last but not least, keep an emergency kit in your car. Keep an old blanket, a jacket and a pair of gloves. This way if you need to change a tire, you will be prepared. If you don’t know how, practice makes perfect.
