Avoid Getting Strep Throat
Strep throat is caused by the Group A Streptococcus bacteria. It is a common throat bacterial illness. Strep throat affects the mucous membranes found in the pharynx and often it travels to the tonsils. Strep throat is most common in children ages five to fifteen. People who smoke or live in poor conditions such as dampness and close quarters can contract strep throat as well. People who get infected with strep throat start to show signs about two to five days after being exposed.
Symptoms may include sore throat, headache, nausea, and chills. The severity of the illness depends on the individual as there are many different strains of strep throat. Some people may have a few symptoms and recover in several days while others can get very ill for a prolonged period of time. In severe cases of strep throat, the patient can develop a scarlet fever rash or rheumatic fever. If you come down with strep throat, to avoid further complications, see a physician immediately. Strep throat can be treated by antibiotics such as azithromycin and penicillin.
The trick to strep throat is to avoid contracting it. If you are around someone who is sick with strep throat, keep your mouth closed so as not to breathe in any of the bacteria.
If you are sick with the illness, cover your mouth or nose when coughing or sneezing. Do not let anyone touch your used tissues. Because strep is carried in the form of bacteria it is important to keep your hands clean and refrain from touching your mouth, nose or eyes.
Make sure to properly wash your hands after coming into contact with someone having step throat or something that they have touched. Especially wash your hands when you are either consuming or preparing food.
Hand sanitizers help protect you from contracting the bacteria. Use hand sanitizers in conjunction with washing your hands. They are not meant to be used as a substitute. Keep your open wounds clean and bandaged. The strep bacteria can enter in through an open wound.
Prevent strep throat and other illnesses by taking your vitamins daily. Vitamins and supplements will help strengthen the body’s immune system and can fight off any bacterial infections.
