The practice of wearing religious tattoos is nothing new. This concept of wearing religious tattoos is quite old and has relevant historical importance. Remarkable religious tattoos were there in the time of Egyptian civilization where women used to wear tattoos of their goddess of fertility. Several mummies have been found with tattoos around their waist depicting the religious beliefs of these people. In the ancient society of the Roman Empire, tattoos were forbidden and it was only used for displaying disgrace and shame. Thus tattoos were drawn on the bodies of criminals and prisoners.

Ancient history has proved that people of historic ages used to believe in spirits and thus wore religious tattoos on their body to protect themselves from any kind of danger. Several mummified bodies of ancient men have been excavated which shows that people in those days used to wear tattoos for religious purposes. Various animal tattoos represented the fact of having tattoos drawn for religious purposes.

With the advent of Christianity, the followers of this religion used to wear tattoos hidden under their arms. As Christianity was prohibited in those days of the Roman rule, Christians used to wear tattoos under their arms to identify each other. The Christian crusaders used to draw a small cross on their hand to make sure that they receive a Christian funeral if they ever get killed in a battle in the foreign lands.

Religious tattoos are quite famous in India and south East Asian countries. Many pious Hindu wear the holy symbol of the Hinduism on their body. Some of them also draw images of their gods and goddesses. Buddhist monks used to inscribe their sacred texts on their body which they believed will keep their mind and body in peace and harmony. Even nowadays Buddhist monks wear sacred tattoos for their protection and health.

In today’s generation religious tattoos are worn not only for religious purpose but merely for fashion. Trendy people are flaunting their tattoos which are sacred symbols of various religions. Thus religious tattoos are quite in and have become trendy as well.
