Tattoo goes back a long time in the past when the Tihitians used the word ‘Tatu’ which means to mark something. This Tahitian word may be called the originating word for the modern word Tattoo. Tattoo has been in use from the time of many ancient civilizations. And historians say that it was in use even before the birth of the Christ. History also suggests the fact that Egyptian civilization used to wear various kinds of tattoo on their body. From the innumerable Egyptian wall paintings which date back as old as 2000BC, one can easily derive that the use of Tattoo or marking on the body was quite in use those days.

Use Of Tattoo In Different Civilization

While describing a brief history of tattoo, it is important for us to know that the earliest men who used tattoos on their body were from the Bronze Age. After that various evidences have proved that men from the Pazyryk culture used different kinds of animal tattoo on their body. Other cultures who had the custom of using tattoos on their bodies were Egypt, Japan, New Zealand, Indonesia and Africa. But the most famous among these were the Polynesian people who used to decorate themselves with elaborate and geometrical tattoos.

The Tahitians had a great historical importance of tattooing. And the art of tattoo has come down from generations through songs, ceremonies or legends. The Tahitians used to decorate their whole body with different tattoos. In Samoa Islands, the tattoos were used to decorate the body of the chief of the tribe and members from renowned families. They followed the ritual of wearing tattoos on the onset of puberty especially for young women. The Hawaiians called tattoos ’Kakau’. The tattoos they used to wear on their body not only decorated them beautifully but also protect their health and spirit.

Tattoos have graced people and civilizations for many decades and its presence are still there in our modern society, where people use it as a fashion tool. This brief history of tattoo enables us to have a quick look at the various cultures who mastered this unique skill of creating decorative tattoos as early as 2400BC.
