We spend almost one-third of our life sleeping, so just think how important sleeping is in our lives. Sleeping is no more considered as a feature associated with laziness. Rather in today’s lifestyle if you get a good night sleep then you are considered very healthy and lucky.
Sleeping Disorders are very common amongst people these days. Just like healthy food a healthy sleep is necessary to stay fit. A study suggests that if we do not sleep for 24 hours at a stretch the metabolism of our body and mind gets disturbed. If this is a regular feature then it is a simple invitation to many diseases and might result in Sleeping disorders which are very common these days.
Sleeplessness is such a problem which we face in our lives at some or the other stage. Sleep is a natural boon which automatically stimulates our body to take rest after the whole day’s hectic work and it helps in relieving all the stress and tension from our body too. Food, sleep, danger and sex are four important activities which are found in each and every creature on the earth.
Sleeping Disorders mainly arise due to many mental problems and if there is some kind of mental disturbance then you can never sleep through the night.
Nature has made our lifecycle in such a way that we sleep at night and stay awake to work in the day. Newly born babies spend most of their time sleeping and when they grow their sleeping duration reduces to 8-10 hours in a day.
How Much Sleep do we need?
The requirement of sleeping hours is different for different people, some people become fresh after a short nap only while some need a long sleep of may be 2-3 hours to feel fresh. Quality of sleep is more important than quantity of sleep. However it is suggested that during night everyone should sleep 7-8 hours at a stretch to feel fresh and recharged for the next day. So it is more important that you sleep well and deep rather than how many hours you sleep. A disturbed sleep for 7-8 hours is not good as a short sleep for 5-6 hours which is deep and undisturbed. A deep sleep is the one where you feel fresh both mentally and physically after getting up. While sleeping if your sleep gets disturbed for more than twice then it is not a sound sleep.
Generally for new born babies 20 hours, 6-7 year old kids 12 hours and for adults 7-8 hours of sleep is necessary, this is what doctors suggest. After 45 years of age generally the time duration of sleeping decreases and 6 hours of sleep is more than enough at this stage. But it can increase or decrease according to the body requirement at this age. But remember 10 hours of disturbed sleep is not as good as 3 hours of undisturbed sleep. So if you sleep late at night say 1 or 2 o’ clock then your body needs a longer sleep.
Disturbed need causes diseases
Sound sleep make you healthy and you stay fit too but if your sleep is disturbed then your body and mind remain disturbed and you feel irritated and lazy all the time. Lack of sleep causes lack of concentration and thus hampers your work too. This might cause gastric problems, head ache, restlessness or body ache and many more problems. If this sleeping disorder persists for a long time then it will affect your immunity system too and will cause blood pressure , diabetes , heart problems, stroke or liver defects and many more severe ailments.
While sleeping in the night different parts of brain play different roles. Before going into deep sleep we go through different stages of sleep and that is how we transform from light sleep to deep sleep. It takes around 90 minutes to reach the stage of deep sleep and there are mainly Five Stages before we reach deep sleep. Electroencephalograph is used by doctors to study various stages of sleep. Sleep is of generally two types first is Rapid Eye Movement (REM) which is also called Active sleep or Paradoxical Sleep and during this type of sleep the person falls sleep very quickly. The second type of sleep is Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) which is also known as Silent sleep and here the person does not dream.
Stages of Sleep
During the first stage of sleep person is slightly awake and conscious and during this time brain produces some waves which we call Beta Waves. Beta Waves are small in frequency but very high in speed. But as our mind starts entering the relaxed mode and starts resting it starts producing Alpha Waves. During this time when you are about to sleep but still your mind is restless this stage is called Hypnologic Hallucination. In this stage of hallucination the person feels that someone is calling him / her by his / her name and he / she is about to fall.
During the first stage of sleep cycle the sleep is not very deep so we call this stage as Transition Stage too, because it is the stage between sleeping and awakening. During this stage brain produces Theta waves at very fast speed. To reach this stage the brain just takes 5-10 minutes and if you wake up someone during this stage then he / she will say that he / she had not slept.
This is the second stage of sleep and during this stage the body temperature starts decreasing along with the heart beat rate too. It takes around 20 minutes to reach this stage.
During this stage the slow waves produced by the brain help in converting light sleep into deep sleep and these waves are known as Delta Waves.
In this stage the person is already in deep sleep mode and this stage remains for about 30 minutes. Researchers say that the people who are into the habit of sleep walking do this during this stage only.
Dreams are an important part of this stage. In medical terminology this stage is also known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During this stage breathing speed and the working of brain increases. This stage is also called as Paradoxical Sleep, because during this stage the brain and body systems work more actively and thus the muscles of our body are more relaxed.
If we talk about the whole sleep cycle it takes about 90 minutes to reach the last stage and during one night this whole cycle is repeated at least 4-5 times. If you do not have deep sleep then body feels fatigued and there is no fresh Try and lower the temperature of the roomness after sleeping. This means that there is some problem with our sleeping cycle. this will help you in getting a deep sleep.
