Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common sexual dysfunction in males, also known as rapid ejaculation, rapid climax, premature climax early ejaculation. It literally means coming too early, even before the female partner reaches the climax or orgasm. In other words, this disorder leads to occurrence of ejaculation before the wishes of both partners. This problem can cause a lot of frustration which exhibits a negative effects on the relationship. It can also result in lack of self-confidence leading to relationship break-up. Premature ejaculation is found to effect nearly 25-40 % of men and marked by lack of voluntary control over the ejaculation phenomenon. This problem is not permanent in nature and can be cured with the passage of time, by bringing positive changed in man's ejaculating tenacity.

Premature Ejaculation : Causes

In the year 1990, some research indicated that the pelvic muscles surrounding the penile erectile bodies, becomes hyperactive during the state of premature ejaculation. It is possible that a combination of hypersensitivity of the penis and hyper plasticity of a pelvic muscles causes premature ejaculation. The most prominent physical cause of this health disorder is still unknown. This problem is most likely psychological in origin and takes place most commonly during a man's first experience with intercourse and associated anxiety.

Certain common causes of premature ejaculation are mentioned below :

Sexual frezyness - This is most commonly observed in males of younger age and those who have their first experience with the intercourse activity. In such cases, the arousal built up to a great extent, resulting in early ejaculation. It is common to observe the first timers ejaculating, by just being touched by the female partner.

Excessive sexual taboos - Due to some custom constraints, couples fail to make love with enough freedom. In most of the Asian countries, the pattern of joint families interferes with the intimacy, which leads to quickening of the intercourse activity. Sometimes even under the improved circumstances, some males ejaculate very early.

Excessive of masturbation at a younger age - Rapid masturbation activity, at a younger age, results in formation of this habit even in the later lives. This accounts for premature ejaculation to a great extent.

Mental stress - This cause proves that love making is an emotionally triggered activity. Men are likely to ejaculate early, to get rid of their pent-up frustration.

Certain psychological factors that contribute to this disorder are listed below :

  • Depression and related anxiety about poor performance in bed
  • Rejection anxiety
  • Anticipation of failure
  • Anticipation of harm
  • Adverse experience with sex in childhood
  • Religious beliefs
  • Financial concerns
  • Job stress
  • Relationship problems
  • Some prescription drugs

This problem can also effect males who are mature and capable of performing love making activities. Premature ejaculation is considered to be a very common male erectile dysfunction. It can also take place when it has been a long time since a man last ejaculated. If it occurs during the first encounter with the intercourse, then it is considered normal. But if the problem of premature ejaculation continues, then a treatment becomes necessary.

Premature Ejaculation Treatment

Most cases of premature ejaculation are treated pharmaceutically, but a great deal of help can be provided by behavioral-training methods used in early centuries. These behavioral-training methods usually includes practices like concentrating more on something like work details or anything which is less erotic. Some methods that have been found to work effectively in order to overcome premature ejaculation are:

The Squeeze Technique - This method was originated by Masters and Johnson. It is a "start and stop" technique, wherein the ejaculation is controlled by applying pressure at the top and bottom of the male organ. This method was originally described by Masters, Johnson and Kolodny.

The Start-Stop Technique - This method was originated by Zilbergeld. It includes a complete series of exercises starting with self-stimulation and finishing with intercourse, so as to enhance the ejaculatory control.

Change of Thrusting - This can be done by changing the angle and depth of penile penetration. This technique is further supported by slowing the tempo of thrusting so as to take the edge over the ardor.

Psychological Work - Males who successfully last for a long time have capacity to control the anxiety during the intercourse activity. It enables a male a focus more on the non-genital aspects of the intercourse activity, so that the associated energy gets distributed to the other parts of the body.

Medication - Some anti-depressants are often found helpful in controlling the problem of premature ejaculation. Before taking any such medicine, it is important to consult doctors specialized in treating sexual health condition. These drugs can help in curing this disorder and increasing the time taken for ejaculation by decreasing the blood flow in male genital organ.
