Low sperm count is one of the most common sexual disorders faced by males. This health problem is caused due to reduced sperm motility and malformation in the structure of sperm. This eventually causes problems like infertility or impotency in males. A number of biological and environmental factors are responsible for effecting the sperm count, motility and morphology of the sperm. Most of these factors are well described in the ancient ayurvedic texts. It has been found that normal sperm count is about 40 million/ milliliter to 120 million/ milliliter. A sperm count of less than 20 million/ milliliter is known as Low Sperm Count or Oligospermia.

Causes of Low Sperm Count

The main causes of low sperm count are described below -

Age - A variety of research work has been done to determine the effect of aging phenomenon on male fertility. The decrease in fertility becomes notably high as the age progresses. A good diet and healthy life style helps in retarding the aging process. The rate of fertilization decreases for males who are above 40 years. Ancient ayurvedic studies recommend a " Vajikarana therapy" for males who are above 20 years and below 70 years. This helps in sustaining effective sexual activity, quantity and quality of healthy sperms, and sperm motility.

Testicle Overheating - Overheating of male testicular region occurring due to high fever, hot water bath, and extremely tight garments are responsible for reduction in sperm count. The testes are present in scrotal sac, which is outside the body and its temperature is about 3 degrees cooler than the internal body temperature. So any factor, which causes increase in the temperature of testicles, is responsible for causing low sperm count.

Addictions - Addiction to cocaine and marijuana is responsible for decreasing the sperm motility and count by as much as 50%. Smoking also decreases the sperm count, motility, low libido, erectile dysfunction, impotence and results in certain genetic changes. Addiction to alcohol can lead to sperm damage. Decrease in alcohol intake helps in enhancing the fertility.

Diet and life style - Mental stress caused due to work and personal life, strained relationships, lubricants or spermicides used in condoms along with other physical stress can temporarily result in low sperm count. Dietary problems like nutrient deficiencies or malnutrition, deficiency of Vitamin C, Zinc, Selenium etc. and decrease the sperm count to a large extent. Injury caused in the scrotal region can lower the sperm count. Obesity can also be one of the cause of low sperm count.

Genetic Factors - Any kind of malformation in male reproductive organs, and tissues is responsible for reduced sperm count. Another reason may be obstruction of semen carrying tubes. Males with one extra chromosomes are also susceptible to this disorder.

Environmental Factors - Exposure to chemicals, toxins and infections like pesticides, hydrocarbons and mumps can cause a great deal of decrease in sperm count. Exposure to heavy metals like lead, arsenic or cadmium can also cause low sperm count. Sperm producing cells are affected by radiations and X-rays.

Urological Disorders - A chronic infection of urinary tracts known as varicocele, causes low sperm count. Endocrine dysfunction are also responsible for this sexual ailment.

Ways to Increase Sperm Count

Following are some of the ways to increase the sperm count in males -

If a specific gap is maintained between consecutive ejaculation, like a gap a 3 days, then the density of semen would be high. The greater would be the rate of ejaculation, the less would be the density of the semen. It is suggested that love making must be practiced, rather then masturbation.

Refraining from addictions like smoking and alcohol consumption. Alcohol causes severe effects on the functioning of liver, which, in turn causes an abrupt rise in the level of estrogen in the body. Consumption of even two drinks a day has long term effects of sperm production.

Regular work-outs and exercise helps in shooting up the sperm count in semen.

Eating healthy and nutritious food can also enhance the sperm count. The diet with low fat and high protein level, vegetables, whole grains is are considered good for health and for the sperm count. Intake of bitter, astringent, spicy food and caffeine must be avoided.

Avoiding heating of testicles and scrotal sac. Garments must be comfortable and loose enough for the air to pass. Hot water bath must be avoided.

Overcome the problem of obesity and excessive weight, as it causes imbalance between testosterone and estrogen level.

Practicing relaxation techniques to get rid of stress and tension. It is important to keep the mind and body healthy by practicing regular yoga and meditation.

Body massage with certain herbal oil improves the blood circulation and thereby enhances the sperm count.

The density of sperm are believed to be the highest in early morning, and love making during early morning is found to be most effective.

Intake of natural supplement increases sperm production and thereby their count. These natural supplements improve the general vitality and functions effectively as a nervine and restorative tonic. They support a complete and powerful contraction of the seminal vesicles, and thereby bringing about complete evacuation and increase in the quantity of semen.
