Recruitment at ISRO
Every year ISRO through its website and also through advertisements in leading newspapers and the Employment News invites applications from young professionals in India for filling up vacancies in the fields of Engineering, Medicine, Management and Administration, Accounts & Auditing, Store keeping etc. The general notion, that ISRO recruitment is always suitable for Engineering graduates and postgraduates is really baseless as the R&D institution even calls for MBBS/MD and MBA students to apply for its various posts.

Recruitment for the post of Scientist and Engineers
The most common type of vacancies that are filled each year by ISRO is the ‘Annual Recruitment drive for Scientists/ Engineers – SC or SD category’. For applying for the post of Scientist or Engineer at ISRO, the minimum academic qualification required is a Bachelor level degree in Engineering or a Bachelor level degree in Technology in the areas of Electronics, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering and for some posts, post graduation in Engineering is also required. The pay band for the Scientist or Engineer SC post is Rs 15600 to Rs 39100. The usual posts for which applications are called from engineering graduates are –
Scientist/Engineer SC – Electronics, Scientist/Engineer SC – Mechanical and Scientist/Engineer SC – Computer Science.
The academic eligibility requirement as mentioned above is a Bachelor level degree in Engineering or Technology and with an aggregate score of 65% (and for all semesters). For some of the Scientist and Engineer vacancies final year students can also apply. The age requirement for applying with ISRO is usually 35 years as on the month of the examination.
However age relaxations are applicable for different category of applicants such as – plus five years for applicants belonging to the SC and ST categories and plus three years for applicants belonging to the OBC category. Applicants who belong to the ex-servicemen category and those belonging to the Persons with Disabilities category also enjoy upper age relaxation as defined by the Government of India related orders.
Applicants who meet all the minimum eligibility requirements of ISRO are required to submit their online application after filling their personal and academic details. An initial screening is done to shortlist candidates for the written examination. The written examination for ISRO is actually an entrance type test with multiple choice questions.
The written test is held only in select major Indian cities and normally covers centers such as – Bangalore, Trivandrum, New Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chandigarh etc. Shortlisted candidates are intimated using call letters which are sent via electronic mail to the e-mail id given by the candidate during the online application submission process.
The next stage of selection is Interview and the venue for interview usually is the city of Bangalore or the respective ISRO center where the vacancy has to be filled. The to and fro transport expense of the shortlisted candidate at this stage is reimbursed by ISRO based on certain limits and conditions. Finally based on the written test score and the interview performance a list of successful candidates are prepared and uploaded in the ISRO website.
Application Procedure at ISRO
Application for any of the vacancies at ISRO or at any of its centers have to be submitted using online registration process only. Every applicant should have a valid and active e-mail id before applying with ISRO. Once ISRO comes out with a job related advertisement, candidates have to pay the examination fee of Rs 100 using Demand Draft services of a Nationalized Indian Bank.
The DD number and date has to be quoted during the online registration process. Once the online registration is successful, the candidates will be sent his or her registration number using an electronic mail. Women applicants and applicants belonging to SC/ST and PWD categories are not required to pay the examination fee of Rs 100. The candidate has to then send the DD along with the details of the online registration process to ISRO.
Other employment opportunities at ISRO
ISRO offers employment opportunities even to Medical and Management students at its various centers. For the post of Medical Officer at ISRO, candidates with the following degrees can apply – MBBS and Doctor of Medicine or Master of Surgery. The candidate also should have atleast two years of clinical experience in a 100 bed hospital (with teaching facilities). Similarly ISRO offers many vacancies for students with degrees such as – Master of Business Administration and Master of Commerce.
Doctorate degree holders in Science and Engineering can also register with ISRO for employment opportunities at its various centers. The PhD degree should ideally be in the following areas – Mechanical, Computer, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Aeronautics, Structures, Material Science and Metallurgy, Remote Sensing, Power systems, Oceanography, Telecommunications etc.
