By the end of 13th week of pregnancy, the infant appears like a tiny yet fully formed human being. While the infant’s head is yet a bit large, its body is beginning to catch up. The infant's eyes start moving closer together by pregnancy week 13. Up until this juncture in time eyes were placed near along the sides of the head and infant's intestines also move further inside the body, and the infant’s little pancreas beings to produce insulin that would be vital to regulate the infant’s glucose levels later in life.

The mother’s womb continues to grow at 13th week of pregnancy and as it continues the mother might start feeling some ache or irritation in her abdomen. This is absolutely normal as the ligaments surrounding the uterus get stretched in the forthcoming weeks to accommodate the unborn child, and such stretching often end up in what is known as round ligament pain. This ligament pains are very common by pregnancy week 13, but can be alerting if the mother has never experienced them before. It generally represents as brief but acute stabbing pains in the abdomen, but the mother might also feel dull aches in the lower abdomen which last for a short while. Most often woman feels this when she gets up all of a sudden or change the posture. She may feel this pain as she attempts to roll over fleetly on the bed.

If anyone experiencing any kind of pain, which is accompanied by other signs however, such as cramps, bleedings or vomiting, the mother must call health care provider immediately. Generally round ligament pains do not last more than some minutes and if there are persistent pains, there could be something else that may be getting on the warnings suggesting a trip to the health care provider.

In most of the pregnant women, simply relaxing techniques might give off round ligament pains but one has to be sure that she rests comfortable and discontinues any sort of activities that cause the discomfort. One should also remember to get up easy every time she gets out of bed or moves to the chair. This becomes more and most essential as the womb continues expanding and the mother, growing bigger and bigger.

Well, it is the time for celebration. For many expecting mothers, pregnancy week 13 is a time to cheer up. However, a pregnancy at 13th week means that she is entering her second trimester that reflects the risks for miscarriage drops considerably. The mother is much more likely to carry her infant to term now that she has made it to thirteen weeks successfully. Some of the pregnant females though are still at risks for getting miscarriage through the 20th week. In certain cases the women might get diagnosed to suffer from an incompetent cervix, a condition that is the result of a cervix which is very weak to remain closed during gestational period.

Ideally what happens when the women have an incompetent cervix is the infant has been delivered very early to survive and such relatively uncommon issue is generally the cause of up to 25% of 2nd trimester losses. For diagnosing an incompetent cervix could be made with the help of an ultrasound or it could be done manually also. Usually an incompetent cervix is carried out when the cervix gets opened more than an inch during pregnancy or when the length is lesser than 20 millimeter. Alas, an incompetent cervix, oftentimes, is only diagnosed once the women have had one or two late abortions, or abortions those occur in the 2nd trimester.

There are some cases those might increase the women's risk of getting this problem including: cervical traumas, congenital disorder and a previous D & C. As the luck would have it, there is a process known as a cerclage, which can be used for stitching the cervix and getting it closed. This is ideally performed between weeks 14-16, and generally allows the women carrying their infant to term. One should remember however that most of the pregnant women won’t have incompetent cervix, and will have higher chances of carrying their infant to term after 13th week mark.

The mother will also probably begin experiencing remarkably better in the forthcoming weeks. Instead of feeling exhausted all the time and nauseous, the mother might find that she has a newer sense of health and energy. By 13th week of pregnancy the mother wants to wear loose fitting clothes and she still may not be large enough to get fitted into maternity dresses, but chances are having favorite pairs of jeans those are no longer among the favorite just due to they don’t fit as well. The breasts will continue changing throughout the gestational period week by week. In addition to the areolas getting darkened, the mother might start observing the veins in the breasts those are getting prominent. Some of the expecting mothers also start developing large benign bump on the breast during pregnancy. Such lumpy bump surrounds the areola is gland that grows and develops as the pregnancy progresses.
