Pregnancy and Dehydration

Dehydration is common during pregnancy and can lead to some severe complications. It has been observed that women are very careful regarding intake of vitamins and minerals and avoiding caffeinated beverages and alcohol but they are not very particular about their water intake.

During pregnancy, water requirement of a female increases considerably and if it is not fulfilled, it can lead to dehydration. Since there are not very considerable warning signs of dehydration in pregnancy, a woman hardly comes to know about it initially. Since amount of fluids eliminated from the body exceed the amount of fluids consumed, it can result in acute scarcity of water in the body, which is considered as very dangerous for the growing embryo.

In some cases, where severe dehydration occurs, a woman may be required to be admitted in hospital and is administered with IV fluids. In the first trimester, dehydration can result in insufficient quantity of amniotic fluid. This leads to baby lying against the wall of uterus and ultimately, limb deformities. In the second and third trimester, dehydration in pregnancy can cause heat exhaustion, fatigue and cramps in muscles. Premature labor can also occur in some cases.

As far as symptoms of dehydration in pregnancy are concerned, the urine becomes dark yellow in color. A woman may also suffer from lack of urination and dizziness. Other symptoms include frequent and excessive thirst, nausea and vomiting etc. Lips of pregnant woman become chapped and she is encountered with frequent headaches. Skin also looses its elasticity. As said, in some cases, these symptoms may not be noticed until emergency conditions emerge.

Causes of dehydration in pregnancy are many. For example, if a pregnant woman has high blood pressure, she can suffer from dehydration in pregnancy. Due to excessive vomiting also, dehydration occurs. Excessive sweating also results in dehydration. If dehydration has been caused due to nausea and vomiting, health care provider must be contacted so as to get appropriate medications. Lost electrolytes from the body can be replenished through popsicles, Gatorade etc.

Since lives of mother as well as baby are involved, a woman should take all steps for preventing dehydration. She must obey the instructions given by her health care provider regarding fluid intake and exertion so that dehydration does not occur.
