Research has shown that most new mothers’ get weighed down by the changes that take place after the birth of their babies. This is because women are not prepared for the lifestyle changes that accompany a baby. They are not geared up for their new role as a mother and are exhausted by the amount of work required to take care of a new born.
Many people would consider raising babies an innate skill that women possess. However, nothing could be further from reality, because mothering is a learnt skill and women become more confident about their nurturing skills over a period of time.
What helps new mothers in adjusting to their changing lifestyle is prior knowledge about motherhood and babies, a good support system consisting of family and friends and an alert, receptive baby who allows mother to take care of her\him.
Lifestyle Changes
Babies do more than just changing the lifestyle of their parents. They change their perspective towards life. You start looking at things from your baby’s point of view.
- Mundane things get packed with meaning and excitement.
- You may want to give up your old drinking and smoking habits for the sake of your baby’s health.
- You may want to stop being a workaholic and take time off to be with your baby.
- Entertainment options will change from going to pubs or discos to taking your child to an amusement park or a museum. The latest animation film will probably be the movie to check out rather than the latest bollywood flick.
- Your sleeping patterns will change according to your child’s needs. You’ll want to go to bed early so as to be up in time to send your kid to school.
Even though you may find your freedom curbed, your own wants becoming secondary and your child’s need becoming of primary importance, the trick is to enjoy your parenthood. As a parent you must also realize that raising a child is not just a women’s job. Mothers’ need all the love and support from their husbands’ to bring up a child.
