Building Healthy Sleep Pattern Routine

New born babies sleep a lot, on an average they sleep some 17-20 hours a day. This is important too, as the growth hormones work most efficiently when babies are asleep and make them more energetic once awake. This sleep however, may not be in long sessions and babies wake up at least 5 times in the night for one reason or another.

It is only after the third or the fourth month of their birth that a baby starts forming a sleep pattern. Parents can help their baby in forming a healthy sleep pattern routine that matches their routine as well. Of course, this is easier said than done but you can use certain suggestions given below to simplify this task.

Ideas for Sleep Pattern Routines

The best way to establish a routine is to take cues from your baby. Some babies may start crying when they are sleepy, while others may rub their eyes or pull their ears. When you get these cues put her off to sleep by using a sleep time routine. Slowly your baby will learn that it is sleep time whenever you perform the routine.

Give your baby a bath

Most babies sleep extremely well after a bath. In fact, your spouse can give your baby a bath while you get on with other chores. It has been seen that babies really enjoy a bedtime bath with their fathers. Just take care not to get your baby overexcited.

Read a bedtime story or play a game

You can sit with your baby in her bed and read her favorite story to put her to sleep. Apart from being a great sleep pattern routine it is educational and helps in improving your baby’s language skills.

Alternately, you can play some bedtime game like peek-a-boo or some car game that doesn’t get the baby too excited.

Singing or playing music

Music has a calming effect on a baby. You can either sing a lullaby or play some soft music for the baby. Playing it every night will reinforce the sleep pattern.

Getting them ready to sleep

Sleep time routine can also consist of changing baby’s night dress, brushing teeth, saying good-night to everyone and finally, you can cuddle and kiss the baby to sleep.

You can choose any of these ideas you like and build a routine out of it.
