Crib bedding is an important accessory of a baby’s nursery. While choosing a baby crib bedding set parents should not just focus on the latest trends and designs but also keep certain safety conditions in mind. They should not get lured by the design and keep in mind other beneficial aspects of crib bedding while purchasing one.

Safety

Normally, a baby crib bedding set comes with accessories like crib bumpers, comforters etc. Research has shown that many infant crib deaths were a result of extra pillows, crib bumpers, comforters, sheepskins, stuffed toys and other soft accessories in a baby’s crib. Therefore, it would be a good idea to remove these from a baby’s bedding and instead focus on quality of bedding sets, bed sheets etc.

Crib bedding

Babies are certainly messy. Therefore, you need baby bed sheets of good quality that can stand frequent washing as they are going to be laundered much more than adult bed sheets.

Look for a material that is soft on your baby’s skin. The bedding material should be non-inflammable. Cotton sheets are a good option as they are durable and safe.

Avoid sheets with nylon thread as nylon threads melt in high heat driers. They can lead to choking hazards and may not be able to hold the bedding in place. Cotton or cotton blend threads are safer.

Keep 2-3 extra crib sheets, they’ll come in handy if your baby messes the crib bedding at night. Also, place a plastic cover underneath the crib sheet to keep the crib mattress dry.

Crib sheets should fit the crib mattress snugly so as to prevent SIDs (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Loose sheets increase the chances of baby getting entangled in them and getting suffocated. For extra security, look for elastic straps that clip to the crib sheet under the mattress and hold the sheet in place.

Finally, while deciding your baby crib bedding set budget, keep in mind how long you are going to use it. If you wish to pass it on to your other children as well, you can consider spending an extra sum for higher-quality crib bedding. However, if you wish to change the nursery’s décor often, you can buy inexpensive yet, quality bedding.
