Protein is an essential part of our diet and we need it in order for our bodies to function properly. Not all of us however, are aware of exactly how much our body needs to function properly nor do we always know what the best sources of protein that we can consume are. In order to build muscle and expend energy, our bodies rely on protein as the powerhouse of energy in our bodies.

Most adults, on average, need to consume 30 percent of their daily calories from protein sources. There are a lot of different factors that determine exactly how much protein a person needs including size, weight and activity level. The amount of protein in grams that is needed is calculated depending on your weight. For most people who are moderately active, the average daily protein requirements should be .75-1.00 grams of protein for every kilogram of body weight.

Athletes require a higher protein intake and people who do a lot of strength training also have higher daily protein requirements in order to fuel their muscles to build lean muscle and have enough strength and energy to power through workouts.

What is the best way to get enough protein in your diet? For some, eating lean meats and light dairy products gives them substantial amounts of protein in their diet and they get all of the protein that they need. For others, protein supplements such as power bars or protein shakes fuel their bodies with the added amount of protein that is required of them. Vegetarians and vegans usually get their protein intake from plant and soy based products.

Getting your protein in the form of lean meats or soy products will help ensure that you are not getting too much fat or cholesterol that certain protein sources contain. Make sure you get a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet as well.
